HOW DID WE GET HERE?
In 2019, we began sharing our love of Black people and culture through Flowers, a podcast and an Instagram page. We took our time creating a digital space that was reflective of who we were… and then a pandemic swept in and we found ourselves navigating new realities and rethinking the space we were building. Honestly, we needed more. We began imagining the “what-ifs” of a digital space that might highlight the interior lives and creativity of Black women, and how we might use such a space to explore the complex barriers that seem to prevent social, political, and spiritual kinship.
What do Black Muslim women do when they can’t find what they need? They create it! Throwing Seeds is everything we imagined – a space to share stories, ask complex and difficult questions, chronicle beautiful moments, and dream in public. We created this space because we knew that if we needed it, you might need it too.
We believe that the act of proclaiming who we have been, who we are, and who we are becoming is a politics of freedom and agency. This space is not a new beginning, or a remix. It is growth. If you’ve been with us since day one, much love and gratitude. If you’re new to our neighborhood. Welcome !
